Buckle up and join me on a thrilling family road trip from the charming city of Shillong to the enchanting Nongkhnum River Island, the largest river island in West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya . As we ventured along the winding roads, witnessed breathtaking landscapes, and embraced the spirit of adventure, I discovered the true essence of my beloved state- Meghalaya. Get ready to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and the joy of exploration as I recount our unforgettable journey.

Setting off from Shillong: Leaving behind the bustling city of Shillong, me and my family embarked on a road trip towards Nongkhnum River Island. We covered a distance of 80-90ish km at approx. 3.5-4 hours. The drive initially took us through picturesque hill roads, surrounded by lush greenery and mist-covered mountains. As we wound our way through quaint villages and cascading waterfalls, a sense of excitement and anticipation filled the air.

Scenic Delights of West Khasi Hills: The route to Nongkhnum River Island led us through the stunning West Khasi Hills. Driving along the meandering roads, we marveled at the awe-inspiring beauty of the landscapes that unfolded before us. Rolling hills, terraced fields, and dense forests painted a picture-perfect backdrop, creating a sense of serenity and tranquility. As we approach our destination, the anticipation builds. Finally, we arrive at Nongstoin, a small town that serves as the gateway to the island. From here, we continue our journey for another 15-20 km till we reach the destination. Traveling from Nongstoin to Nongkhnum River Island, it's important to be aware that the road conditions can be challenging in some sections. (this was in 2018). The road from Nongstoin to Nongkhnum River Island was not well-maintained and can be rough, uneven, and prone to potholes, particularly during the monsoon season.

Arriving at Nongkhnum River Island: After the exhilarating 15-20 km drive from Nongstoin, we finally reached Nongkhnum River Island. As we stepped onto the island, we were greeted by a breathtaking vista of emerald-green meadows, gently flowing rivers, and a sense of tranquility that seemed to permeate the air. The island's untouched beauty and peaceful ambiance were a stark contrast to the chaos of city life, instantly putting me at ease.

Exploring the Island's Treasures: We spent our time on Nongkhnum River Island exploring its hidden treasures. Walking along the riverbanks, we relished the symphony of nature's sounds and savored moments of solitude. For those seeking adventure, Nongkhnum River Island doesn't disappoint. There were exhilarating water activities like boating, navigating the pristine shallow waters and feeling a rush of adrenaline. You can also trek through dense forests, discovering hidden waterfalls, natural pools, and the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding landscapes. We were just enjoying the sand and water and strolling along the riverbanks back then. There was no Kayaking and other water sports activities when we visited in 2018.

As the sun sets over the island, casting a golden hue on the meadows, we find ourselves in awe of the natural spectacle unfolding before us. The peaceful ambiance and untouched beauty of Nongkhnum River Island create an unforgettable experience, etching its memories deep into our hearts.

As our road trip to Nongkhnum River Island comes to an end, we reflect on the wonders we have witnessed. This journey into Meghalaya's hidden paradise has been a true exploration of nature's splendor and the rich cultural tapestry of the region. With a sense of gratitude and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of our world, we bid farewell to this enchanting island, taking with us memories that will last a lifetime. Nongkhnum is quite remote yet truly, a must-visit spot in Meghalaya.
