Hiking to Khudoi Waterfalls: Beyond the Suspension Bridge

A few years back, we set off on an exciting one-day road trip to Khudoi Falls in Sohtyngkhur Village, Mairang, West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya. We packed snacks and water, ready for the adventure ahead, and left around 10 AM, eager to explore.

The drive was wonderful. The roads wound through green hills, with tall trees lining our path and beautiful mountain views in the distance. The fresh air and scenic beauty made the trip feel special. We sang along to our favorite songs and shared stories, pointing out interesting sights along the way. Each turn revealed new views that made us stop and take photos.

After roughly an hour and a half, we reached the village parking area, parked the car, and gathered our things for the hour-long hike ahead. There are two waterfalls in this same area: the Khudoi Falls and the Kohmang Falls. We decided to visit Khudoi.

Where to?

The adventure began on a good road, which made for an easy start. Soon, we entered the forest, where we felt the cool shade of the trees and could smell the rich scent of nature all around us.

As we hiked through the forest, we could hear birds chirping and leaves rustling. We admired the wildflowers blooming along the path, adding bright colors to the greens and browns of the surroundings.

We took plenty of breaks along the way, snacking and sinking into the cool shade under the big trees. Each stop felt like a relief, with the trees giving us shelter from the hot sun and a chance to catch our breath.

After about an hour of walking, we reached a point where the trail led down a set of stairs. It was a bit steep, but the excitement of reaching the waterfall kept us motivated.

For those who didn’t want to climb further down, a suspension bridge offered a great view from above. We stopped on the bridge to take in the breathtaking sight of Khudoi Falls cascading down the rocks.

The suspension bridge served purely as a scenic viewpoint, offering a breathtaking pause in the journey. The real path to the waterfall was elsewhere—a route that didn’t pass over the bridge but instead wound through dense, lush vegetation. Cemented steps led the way, lined with sturdy railings on both sides to guard against any slip or fall. Even though the railings made the climb safer, the steps were steep, almost as if they were encouraging us to climb into a hidden jungle. Tall plants and thick greenery surrounded the path, creating a tunnel of leaves that made it feel like we were stepping into a secret part of nature.

Finally, we made our way to the base of the falls. When we arrived, we were amazed by the sight. Even in the dry season, the water roared down with impressive power, creating a refreshing mist that felt great on our faces. The sound of the water crashing was amazing.

From the bottom, you could see the suspension bridge hanging high above, like it was floating in the sky.

We spent time just standing-sitting there, enjoying the beauty and taking lots of pictures.

After a lovely hour at the falls, we started our hike back.

We stopped at the suspension bridge one more time to enjoy the view before heading back up. The walk back felt easier, filled with the joy of our experience.

We continued our ascent when we spotted a friendly lady selling snacks just beyond the suspension bridge. Since there were no shops around, we eagerly approached her stall. The snacks she offered were simple but delicious—crispy fried treats and local sweets. Her kindness made the food taste even better.

As we drove back to the city, tired but happy, we talked about our favorite moments from the day. Our trip to Khudoi Falls was filled with adventure, laughter, and quality family time. It reminded us of the beauty of nature and the joy of exploring together.

If you ever find yourself in Meghalaya, don’t miss the chance to visit this hidden gem!
